When you do not understand something that was spoken, you can infer what it means. Inferring means that you are drawing a conclusion from the context of what was said. 

Practice

 

You can practice inferring by looking at a picture in a newspaper. Think about what is going on in the picture using the visual information presented and from your own prior knowledge. Then find the real meaning by reading the article to compare with your inference.
