Not all syllables in a word are spoken with the same tone or rhythm.  

Word stress is when one syllable is more vocally exaggerated than the other syllables in a word.

Suggested Activity

Game: Tongue Twisters

​

Objective: Students will improve their pronunciation by repeating tongue twisters.

​

Directions:

  1. Introduce tongue twisters to the class as well as the importance of pronunciation.

  2. Have students practice a tongue twister with a partner for practice.

  3. When students have had an opportunity to practice, gather students together in a circle to play tongue twister telephone.

  4. Whisper a tongue twister to one student and have that student whisper it to the next student until they reach the last student.

  5. The last student will have to say the telephone message aloud to the class to see if they received the correct message.
