Not all syllables in a word are spoken with the same tone or rhythm.
Word stress is when one syllable is more vocally exaggerated than the other syllables in a word.
Suggested Activity
Game: Tongue Twisters
​
Objective: Students will improve their pronunciation by repeating tongue twisters.
​
Directions:
-
Introduce tongue twisters to the class as well as the importance of pronunciation.

Have students practice a tongue twister with a partner for practice.
-
When students have had an opportunity to practice, gather students together in a circle to play tongue twister telephone.
-
Whisper a tongue twister to one student and have that student whisper it to the next student until they reach the last student.
-
The last student will have to say the telephone message aloud to the class to see if they received the correct message.
